Family Intensives

Family Intensives, Family Therapy

Family Intensives are private, customized experiences for families who may be feeling stuck, looking to improve communication, and searching for more insight than weekly one-hour therapy sessions can provide. Other reasons for seeking intensives may be more emergent in nature: if someone was recently diagnosed with a serious physical or mental condition that will require a lot of the family’s time and resources, for example, or a family member who is struggling with alcohol or substance abuse. There are many situations where having everyone’s undivided attention to focus on the family unit, but guided and navigated by an unbiased and trained professional, is extremely beneficial. Family Intensives are a minimum of 4 hours and are conducted in the comfort of the family home in most cases.  Whether you are in a crisis or looking to make long-lasting change, Family Intensives go beneath the surface to uncover barriers for family closeness and help each family member find their voice. The therapist helps each family member identify and express their feelings, needs, and boundaries and explore underlying issues related to family conflict, distrust, reactivity, and avoidance. The outcomes of Family Intensives create sustainable change and improve the family dynamic for years to come.  While not every family will need to cover every topic, some common themes in Family Intensives focus on:

  • Clarifying boundaries
  • Establishing healthy communication patterns
  • Navigating conflicts
  • Codependent relationships
  • Eliminating negative family roles (i.e. the scapegoat, the black sheep, the rescuer, the peace keeper, etc)
  • Practicing emotional intimacy and vulnerability in relationships
  • Parenting or co-parenting issues
  • Life transitions
  • Past or present trauma
  • Understanding self-medicating behaviors
  • Alcohol or substance abuse
  • Serious or life-threatening physical or mental conditions
  • Developing healthy coping skills
  • Grief and loss
  • Forgiveness for self and others
  • Anger and resentment
  • Repairing trust
  • Building family mental health through healthy activities together
  • Fostering resilience in family relationships
